Summer is the most popular time to move. It seems like everyone wants to move in the summer. And with good reason: the weather is nice, the kids are out of school, the home sale market is thriving. But, of course, when everyone is trying to move at the same time, that can lead to some challenges. So, here are our tips for making moving during the summer months as easy as possible.

1. Call your mover as soon as possible. Like, NOW!

As soon as you think you will be moving during the summer months, call your mover to start the process. Of the people that will move in a year, over 70% of them will move during May-September. That means all the good movers will be at maximum capacity during those months. And you will want to reserve dates for your move before they book up.

If you can be flexible with when you move, wait until the fall. You’ll have more flexibility with scheduling and the cost will be lower, too.

2. When move day comes, be fully packed and ready to go

During your in-home estimate, you’ll determine if the mover is doing all your packing for you, or if you are doing some packing yourself. If you’ve decided to do packing yourself, make sure it is finished before move day. You might think that it’s not a big deal to add packing services at the last minute, but when your mover is already booked to capacity, they are going to struggle to add in extra services at the last minute. If you realize that you aren’t going to get your packing done, call your move coordinator as soon as you can. This will give them a chance to prepare for the change in services requested. Here are tips to help the DIY packing go right.

3. Don’t pack heat sensitive items

Some items just aren’t made to withstand the summer heat on the moving truck. So, don’t bother packing them in the first place. Plan to bring them in the car with you when you travel. If your drive is multiple days, bring them into your hotel room at night. These items shouldn’t be left in hot cars overnight. Extremely heat sensitive items include candles, musical instruments, and vinyl records. You might have additional sensitive items that you should consider, too.

4. Make sure utilities are turned on at both homes

The weather is probably going to be hot when you’re moving in the summer. Keeping those utilities on at origin and making sure they are turned on at destination will help keep everyone more comfortable during the heavy lifting.

5. Stay cool

Even though you aren’t the ones to be doing the heavy lifting, it’s still hot out there. Take care of yourself and your pets. Drink plenty of water and stay out of the sun as much as possible.

With a little extra preparation and care, your summer move can be very successful. Remember these 5 tips to moving during the summer and you’ll be well on your way to your new home in time for fall.
