Crafts with Cardboard: Halloween Edition

Regardless of whether you’ve moved yourself recently or utilized a Grand Rapids moving company, one thing is a given: you have a lot of boxes to move! A good way to clear out leftover boxes is to look for clever ideas to repurpose them. Especially if you have children, utilizing the boxes as building structures and decorations with them is a fun family activity. So pull out those old boxes, get everyone together, and let’s create some spooky crafts to prepare for Halloween!

Dice Halloween Costume 

This is a fun and simple costume, even more so as a pair! Here’s what you will have to have:

Materials:
  • Two Medium (3.0) Moving Boxes
  • White Paint 
  • Black Paint or Construction Paper
  • Scissors or Box Cutter 
Instructions:
  1. Paint the boxes white, then let them dry. 
  2. CAREFULLY! Cut a hole in the sides and top of the boxes, for the arms and head. 
  3. Search for something circular to use as a stencil. A bowl or a plate will work well! 
  4. Draw circles on the box and color them. Or, trace circles on black paper and attach them onto the box.

Castle Archway 

Looking to totally level up your decorations? Try an archway! These can be easily colored and made to match any style!

Materials:
  • 6 Large (4.5) Moving Boxes
  • Mattress or wardrobe box (Many movers take away these larger boxes for your convenience. If your relocation is approaching, make sure to request you moving company not remove these large boxes!) 
  • Spray Paint (Whatever colors match your design)
  • Tape
  • Scissors or Box Cutter
Instructions:
  1. Assemble the 6 large moving boxes. Paint as you wish. We used a mix of black and gray to create a stone and brick look.
  2. As those are drying, cut out your wanted design on the flattened mattress or wardrobe carton. This will be for the top part that connects the two stacks of moving boxes (columns) together.
  3. Employing scissors or a box cutter, BE CAREFUL! Take off that design.
  4. Paint and decorate the top joining pieces.
  5. Once dry, stack the large moving boxes on top of each other to make two pillars. Attach tape to all of the joints. Color the tape for a clean look.
  6. Tape the top connecting part to the top and front of the two columns.

*Tip – Add bricks or weights to the inner portion of the bottom moving boxes to increase stability and support your build.

Semi-Truck Photo Booth 

This project is guaranteed to make you the envy of the neighborhood! And better yet, this one seems to be much more complex than it really is! This project is ideal to allow little ones to enter and exit the “truck cab”, while allowing for adorable pictures from the front. This can be easily painted and decorated to appear like any hero or villain’s car, delivery truck, or favorite Grand Rapids moving company rig!

Materials:
  • 2 Wardrobe Boxes
  • 2 Medium (3.0) Moving Boxes
  • 2 Paper Plates 
  • 2 Paper Towel Rolls 
  • Silver Paint or Aluminum Foil 
  • Packing Paper or Tissue Paper 
  • Scissors or Box Cutter 
  • Tape 
  • Spray Paint (whatever colors match your design) 
  • Tablecloth (Optional) and Folding Table 
Instructions:
  1. Assemble and color the wardrobe and medium boxes in your chosen color.
  2. Start by taping the wardrobe boxes together. Then draw where the outside doors and windshield will go. CAUTIOUSLY! Cut out the doors and windshield using scissors or a box cutter.
  3. Use the large cardboard rectangle that you removed for the doors to make the front grill. Paint that portion of cardboard black. Use silver paint or tape to make lines to give the appearance of the truck grill.
  4. Position the two medium boxes in front of the wardrobe boxes, to create the front of the truck.
  5. Color or paint the paper plates with black markers or paint. Use either silver paint or tape to make the wheels. Secure to the flanks with tape.
  6. Wrap the paper towel rolls with aluminum foil or silver paint. Scrunch up the tissue or packing paper and put it on the top of the roll to make the look of exhaust exiting out of the pipes. Tape to the top back of the wardrobe boxes.
  7. We placed a tablecloth and folding table at the rear of the wardrobe boxes to make the trailer for the truck. You can do something similar to match your aesthetic and decorate however you like!
  8. Add accessories like horns and lights to take it to the next level!

Spooky Coffin Decoration 

Make the creepiest home for your little vampire’s eternal slumber by transforming a wardrobe box! This coffin is a perfect photo station, or attach a skeleton to make a creepy prop!

Materials:
  • Wardrobe Box
  • Box Cutter or Scissors
  • Tape
  • Spray Paint (whatever colors match your theme)
Instructions:
  1. While laying flat, draw the shape of your coffin. This will be the back/interior of the coffin.
  2. Using box cutters or scissors, BE CAREFUL! Cut out the design of that coffin.
  3. Cut out one side of the wardrobe off. Next, cut 2 strips lengthwise from that part (in the pictures above). These will turn into the side parts. You can create them as wide as you’d like, in the pictures, ours are approximately 10-12 inches wide.
  4. Tape the sides to the back portion.
  5. Paint and decorate!
