What You Should Be Doing One Week Before Moving Day

After months of coordinating, groundwork and hard decisions, your move day is only a week away! The final days before your move are often some of the busiest days, as you finish getting everything wrapped up. By tying up the last loose ends the week before moving day, you can overcome any thoughts of uncertainty you may be having.

We reckon you have been following our previous posts on what to do throughout the moving process – if not, you can catch up by following the links below:

Preparing your items for the move

As your move date approaches, now is the time to make sure all your items are ready to be moved. Make sure your refrigerator and freezer are disconnected and defrosted and have time to dry, so water doesn’t leak onto your other possessions. Washers and driers must be disconnected from the walls, and appliances such as grandfather clocks need to be serviced before they can be safely transported. Your mover can likely work with you to arrange a third party to perform many of these tasks for you.

And remember to take down things permanently mounted to your walls before the movers arrive. Items such as towel bars, drapery rods and paintings should be removed and placed on the floor. Consider unplugging and packing the cables from your TVs, computers, and electronics in advance.

Wrapping up your packing

If you are packing yourself, you will need to have all of your smaller items ready before the movers arrive. Hopefully, you already have packed a majority of the non-essential items. Now is the time to concentrate on getting the remaining in order.

Take time to go through your drawers one final time and remove anything that could spill or break. Leaving soft items such as clothing or blankets is fine—your mover can move your furniture with these items inside.

Do not forget to check all the cabinets, closets, storage closets and lockers, along with the attic and shed for any overlooked goods. Also, remember to pack anything you’re planning on moving from your work office, and collect any goods you would have loaned out to friends or family.

Create an “Essentials” box

It’s a good idea to assemble a box of important items that you may need immediately upon arrival at your new home. Settling in can sometimes take a little while, so you’ll appreciate some items set aside and accessible. Some suggestions include packing a basic tool kit, cleaning supplies, kitchen items such as paper towels and paper plates, bathroom supplies including toilet paper, and of course some snacks and easy to prepare food items.

It is often helpful to have your supply box in a transparent plastic container in order to be able to view contents and distinguish it from the countless other boxes that will be involved in your move. If you don’t have room for this box in your car, ask your movers to load it into the moving van last—and unload it first—so you can get to it immediately.

Once these last tasks are completed, you should be ready for your big move. Now the hard part is over and you can sit back and relax. On moving day, the movers will handle all the heavy lifting for you.
